Finally got my Birthday Lantern // Collecting Coleman lanterns

After 10 years of serious collecting, I finally found my Birthday Lantern. A Birthday Lantern is a lantern made in the same month and year you were born. Most Coleman collectors try to find this sort of lantern. This one is a Canadian 335 in red. I'm lucky to have this since Coleman Canada only made lanterns for a few months in the year I was born. This is not a "rare" lantern but the green ver...
So cool.
Completely unneeded on this amp
Thanks for commenting. I don't disagree due to the rectifier tube and moderate B+ voltage these amps use but it doesn't hurt things. The main reason for the video is to show people the unique dual function switch and as I mentioned, I like using the switch for switching leads. I don't like the POP sounds of the input jacks disengaging and engaging. Cheers
@@MikeFreda sorry i now see in the comments you addressed what i said already
Love the old style Coleman lanterns! Great build on the matches
Thanks for commenting. Yes, there is something about these older lanterns. Cheers.
@@MikeFreda I 💯 agree!
Now, if you only sold those!
I can make some extra. Please PM me for details. Cheers.

I came across your video on clearing a blocked air tube. I would like to get a tool if you still have them available. Very informative video, thanks!
Thanks for commenting. I have a new version of the tool. Please have a look at my new video of it and the reason why I developed it. cheers.
小事..大做...😂😂😂😂😂😂
My check valve was stuck and clogged up,therefore wouldn’t allow air to pump into the tank. I took out the shaft and insert rod, then sprayed a little carb cleaner down inside the check valve where the ball sets. I let it set for about an hour or so. Then took some mig welding wire, size 0.30 and pushed down on the ball. A little pressure was in the tank and some carb cleaner came out. After I seen the carb cleaner come out I knew it was free from debris and functioning like it should. Just make sure you don’t have a lot of pressure in the tank or you will get a face full of carb cleaner and Coleman fuel. But it works in a pinch.
Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you sorted it out. Good reminder! Yes, you should always release the pressure and/or have to cap off when working on the CV. Cheers.
Very cool!
Glad you like! Cheers
Everyone one of those are so cool! 👍🏻
Hi, Perfect idea. I have a suggestion for you. Mack polyurtan Cover to reduce Noise.
Thanks for commenting. Yes, a cover is on my to-do list! Cheers
Love the military theme!
Thanks. It fits perfectly into my shop. I’m planning more amps in this sort of look. Cheers.
Thanks, maybe you can go deeper into the components soldering the next time. Good job 😊
Thanks for commenting and for the feedback. It's always a fine line to what to focus on. If I make the video too long, people will not watch. I will keep it in mind though. My next tube amp video will be more about the circuit/wiring and less about the chassis. I figured that people who are watching my build videos know how to solder and install components, but I could be wrong. I guess I could do a seperate video just on that. Cheers.
Showwwwww
Great video on the TPMS fix. I would use a plain alligator clip or other holder, the connected red wire makes it misleading. Just curious to know if the ECU threw any codes after the hack.
Thanks for the feedback. My code reader and it shows nothing wrong. Most basic store bought code readers only typically show something when the engine light is on. I'm not sure if a high end / factory code reader would register anything. The method I show is just "tricking" the ECU with a "high pin" value. Cheers
Hi Mike , thanks for showing how to make the match . Definitely will be trying to make one . I know your Into fixing lanterns , where do you get your parts from being in Canada .
Thanks for commenting. I’m glad you like the video. As for Coleman parts, I typically purchase from OCP and get it shipped to a mail box in Sumas Washington. I work near there and just drive across the border to pick it up. I also goto gatherings and obtain parts. What I’ve also done is find/buy beater lanterns and drive for parts. I have enough common parts to make things work. I hope that helps? Cheers.
Thanks Mike was wondering if they shipped to Canada, and couldn’t find any info
They do. Just give them all the shipping info up front and they can work out the costing. Rob is a good guy!
Shop looks good man! I subbed for more.😊
Thanks for the sub, I appreciate it! Cheers.
Hi Mike, nice job on the tapping jig! I'd like to make one for my lathe. I know this is an old video which explains why the plan link in the description is broken. Do you have an updated download link you can share? Thanks!

Link is now fixed! Cheers

As an ex drug addict, that light cover would’ve been a perfect hiding spot
Oh, okay. That good to know. Cheers.
What power transformer are you using? Would a 50ma 300-0-300 work here? That’s one thing I haven’t understood yet… can you supply too much current?
Thanks for commenting. The transformer I'm using in this preamp is actually used in a Fender Champ amp and its overkill for this circuit. This amp does not draw a lot of current, around 8-10ma. The tubes are bias very lightly to help minimize gain and distortion. The PT you quoted is rated to give 300-0-300 at 50ma of current draw. If you have small amount of current draw you will typically see the B+ voltage being a bit higher. Will it work in the circuit? Yes, it will. The 0D3 will cap the operating voltage at 150VDC but you may have to adjust the large dropping resistors that are placed right in front of the 0D3. Simple ohms law equation will get you in the ballpark. You "may" have to go slightly larger. Its hard to tell until you build and test it. I hope that helps?
@@MikeFredayes, that does help! I’ll do some more research in to a better suited transformer, but I’m finding some champ transformers that should work either way. I’ve built a few paint by numbers, high gain guitar amplifiers… but this will be my first hifi build! This looks like a great build! Thank you… I will post a video when I finish!
thank you for this! very helpful!
You're so welcome! Cheers.

Thanks and welcome. Check out my Short of Stave Falls Generation station. Just as cool.
This is awesome Mike! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting. Glad you liked the video. Cheers.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. We appreciate it.
I followed all the steps and everything worked until I got to the part where you press the lock and unlock of the key fob. when I did that step, nothing happened.
Do you have a hi-fi supply site you’d recommend in the US? For the caps and future builds. Thanks again
Thanks for commenting. I typically order from Mouser and Antique Electronic Supply. For filter caps, there is a large selection of them. The main criteria is Voltage, heat range and life span so you have to pick wisely. Cheers.
@@MikeFreda I didn't see a chassis layout file, like dimensions(like you did for the 12AU7 linestage). Did you make one? totally cool, if not, i'm about to buy metal and just thought i'd ask. Thank you
No, I did not do a chassis layout. You could probably screen shot the chassis footage on the first video and draw it out by hand. I suspect most people would just do a large top plate so my layout probably wouldn’t work. If you want something, I could do a quick sketch for you. Cheers.
do you know the track width ?

I have a friend who is chemically sensitive and she doesn’t like any smells around her. Would you say that a white gas Coleman lantern has less odor than a kerosene Coleman lantern? Thanks!
Thanks for commenting. Coleman Fuel (aka White gas, Naphtha) is a cleaner burning and has less odor than Kerosene. Kerosene is sooty and it also requires preheating since it has a higher flash point. My wife doesn't like any of my kerosene lanterns and prefers me to not light them up when she is around. In an open air environment my wife is okay with white gas. cheers
2:48 Nice watch. Please tell us which model Seiko watch that is. Thanks!
Sure thing. This is JDM Seiko Model 6R15-02R0 - 480027. 38mm, 23 Jewel Movement 6R15C. Automatic with hand wind capability. The numbers on the face a even. 2, 4,6,8,10, 12 which is a bit oddball. The bracelet is okay. It could be better bit it works just fine. Cheers.
I don't mean to be disrespekful. I bawt one of those from some one else off eBay an used it on a millatary stove an a lanturn fount I even filled it with carb cleaner an used my air compressor an it dident clear the tube
Thanks for commenting. You probably have more going on here. I would recommend removing the check valve and using the hydraulic method I described in my other video. Another option is to use a tool that has a grease fitting. No tool is 100% perfect and sometimes you have to think outside the box. Cheers.
awesome video, well done man
Thanks for commenting. I’m glad you liked the video and found it helpful. Cheers.
The Fender Champ, along with several Fender guitar amps, were lifted, or purchased, directly from Bell Telephone and RCA Labs. My 1955 Fender Champ had a sticker on the chassis stating circuit copyright Bell Telephone Labs.
Thanks for commenting. Yes, a lot of the original circuits were “borrowed” from publications. RCA for example published literature on how to employ their tubes hoping people would purchase their tubes to make the circuits. Many companies did this not just Fender. Cheers.
Would have been great to see an indept look
I do have more videos on various bike lights and how they are wired. Please have a look. Was there something you need more clarity on? Cheers.
Thanks for the informative video! Would a 100 watt bulb or 40watt to test heathki A7 mono amp? Thanks
You're welcome and thanks for commenting. You "can" use lower wattage bulbs but what will happen is that the bulb will light up due to their lower rating. It is creating less of a current divider which will allow the bulb to fairly glow. When the bulb lights up it will effect (lower) the incoming voltage to the amp. Some people intentionally do this to guitar amps to create more sag or try to cheaply replicate the "brown sound". I recommend sticking to a higher wattage bulb like the one in my video to not affect the operating voltage of the amp therefore you will measure proper voltages at the normal operation mode the amp will see. I hope that makes sense? Cheers.
Do you ever add an active tone stack to your amps? Thank you. Great videos
Thanks for commenting. On stereo HIFI amps that is just used for audio playback, I typically don’t add a tone stack. They can be tricky to employ, they can add some noise into the system and can rob some power. All this is not that good for lower power SET amps. For guitar amps, yes, I do. Cheers.
@@MikeFreda I had another question, when you connect your source audio to the preamp, do you worry about it not being a line level output? How do you go about that? Thanks
Yes, you have to make sure the level you are using is the right voltage level. Anything that is RCA is typically line level. Headphone jacks could be a “maybe”. You would want to measure that and/or keep the volume low. I do that with my iPhone. Speaker jacks would be a no go. At the end of the day, if you are not sure you could measure the voltage swing (AC) on using a multimeter. Cheers.
Hey I love your videos. I have a question. Does the led bulb need any resistor when changing from halogen? Because mine don’t have the little box which come with the led wire
Most modern LED conversion bulbs have the built in passive circuit to make it work in most cars. The headlight adapter boxes (like the ones in this video) are more than just resistors. They are anti-flicker and/or RFI devices to make them work properly with modern cars. On my older Landcruiser, they were not needed. If you have a newer vehicle, I’d get those “Can Bus” adapters. It works with the ECU to make the LED bulbs “look” like your standard bulb. Cheers.
the office
Can I make a suggestion? As a recording engineer and musician, who wants to build one of these myself May I suggest that you have dual functionality one for recording and one for monitoring through your daw digital audio workstation As I believe the tubes need to be somewhere else in the circuit to do these two jobs separately, which can be easily fixed as long as the box is set up right from the beginning So then you want to monitor your mix when you’re not recording through the tubes Generally, for mastering purposes
Interesting concept. I'd have to research and study that. Does something like this already exist in a tube format?
@@MikeFreda I don’t think so I am definitely not a tube expert myself. I have some audio engineering skills, but of the electrical nature none Although I am very interested in the subject But I can point to do a video where somebody mentioned that concept that I am talking about
@@MikeFreda ua-cam.com/video/j2vPU4ShL-c/v-deo.htmlsi=CilvauSVxW2FrBoe This is the guy I was listening to
Is this for records ? For recording or both ? I imagine it’s for phonograph because there’s only one to per channel I think you want three tubes for channel in recording are you going to build one like that?
Thanks for commenting. This preamp is for 2 channel audio playback. You can input a CD or tuner directly into this. For record (aka Phono) playback, you would need a separate turntable (Phono) preamp with a RIAA equalization circuit ahead of this preamp. There is not enough gain to record with this preamp. You could not directly connect a microphone in this... well, I guess you could but the signal would be low and there is no equalization adjustment. All this preamp does is allow for a bit more gain and a volume control for normal audio playback. I do plan to make a one channel mic pre in the the near future. I hope that answers your question? cheers.
@@MikeFreda I think you mean you plan on doing one for recording soon ? That would be awesome Do you tell how much it cost to build them in your videos?
@@MikeFreda hey Mike, if you’re going to make a recording preamp can I suggest a feature can you make a stereo unit that can be used for recording but also gonna be set up for monitoring your daughter as I understand it the PMs need to be set in a different part of the circuit to do this correctly for mastering purposes
Hello can you help me with the finish line, where i can get one?
Thanks for commenting. I have a full playlist of the different versions I have made over the years. There are schematics and instruction on how to make them. If you start with version 1, you can slowly progress to this final version. Unfortunately, due to material cost, labour and the of shipping, I don't make these for sale. Cheers.
